Taal Lake

The beautiful scenery at Taal Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Philippines. Once a large volcanic caldera formed by various large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago, Taal Lake was tagged as one of the great volcano-tectonic depressions of the world. It became an inlet of the nearby Balayan Bay and was filled. Rainfall over the past three hundred years then further diluted the salinity of the lake water, making it the freshwater lake it is known for today. Taal Lake is also home to unique fauna and until it was hunted to extinction in the 1930s, a population of sharks used to make Taal Lake their home!

Getting to Taal Lake and Taal Volcano:
From Tagaytay City, there are plenty of tour operators that offers tours to Taal Lake and Taal Volcano tours.

One can also hire a tricycle or Jeepney from Tagaytay City to Talisay. A banca then needs to be hired to cross the Taal Lake (be ready to get wet) from Talisay, Batangas.

Do note that public transport is sometimes difficult to handle especially when one is unfamiliar with the surroundings and arrangements for a return trip might be quite mind boggling at times. Thus, it is advisable to hire a private car for a roundtrip or simply join a tour.

Taal Volcano

Famous for being the smallest active volcano in the world, Taal Volcano is actually a volcano within a lake-filled complex caldera called Taal Lake. Described as a small volcanic island called “Volcano Island” by Volcanologists, the Taal Volcano have been identified by the volcanology community as a large potential hazards to population centers.
